One style of vessel form you'll discover there is reminiscent of a chrysalis, seed pods, or flower bud. The shapes originate on the potter's wheel as perfectly cylindrical but are eventually altered by pushing the clay outwards ( “from the inside”, Hutchens explains) to create the feeling of ocean swells. A number of these undulating pieces have been wood-fired to achieve their golden hues. Others are awash in silky blue as iridescent as peacock feathers! Hutchens calls this pearl matte finish Denman Lustre, and it is the product of ongoing experimentation with clay unearthed on his own land.
Other stunning works include plates and bowls incorporating Denman Lustre in contrast with radiant crystalline glazes, as well as shimmering pots rimmed in gold. Hutchens will also be showcasing beautiful new vases with a distressed, antique look. These particular pieces have actually been silk screened with clay 'slip' through traditional Japanese designs historically used for stenciling on fabric!
